Wondrous Words Wednesday celebrates new words we find in our reading. I’d like to share a few I found while reading In Need of a Good Wife by Kelly O’Connor McNees. (I really loved the book.) The book was not about food but a couple of the unknown words turned out to be food.
1. quark cheese: She had made more puddings and quark cheese than they could possibly eat.
Quark cheese is a European fresh soft cheese with a mild flavor and similar in texture to whipped butter or ricotta cheese. It’s actually the most popular cheese in Germany and there are a million uses for it. (My information and photo came from here.)

2. beef ragout: They were servinh\g a choice of beef ragout or quail, he explaied, pea soup and milk rolls.
Beef ragout is a dish that includes beef brisket, tomatoes, parsnips, onion, carrots, and so forth. It sounds similar to a good beef stew.

I’ve heard of beef ragout but have never heard of quark cheese. It sounds delicious – I must investigate and see if I can find some here – we have quite a large German population because of BMW.
Quark cheese has an quirky name but I bet it’s yummy. Ragout I knew…you’re making me hungry though.
That quark cheese looks yummy and I can only imagine how decadent the dishes using that would be!!
I’ve heard of both of these, but I don’t think I’ve ever eaten quark cheese. I must find some sometime.
