Book Review: Feeding the Dragon

I just finished reading this book and I have to tell you, Feeding the Dragon is a triple winner. One, it’s an excellent picture book of China’s back country, it’s people and food. The photos are stunning. Second, it’s filled with yummy and authentic Chinese cuisine. And number three, it’s a travelogue of a trip taken by brother and sister team, Nate and Mary Kate Tate.

The siblings traveled throughout China with just their backpacks and a camera. They wanted to study the culture of the country and it’s cuisine and they wanted to share that information with friends back home. They blogged as they went along at The book followed on their return trip.

The book is like a primer on the regional cuisine of China. The book is divided into nine regions. In each chapter we learn about the region’s history and culture along with the cuisine. Local recipes are included that can be cooked in the average home kitchen.

At the end of the book there is a great section called “Basics”. In it the authors talk about what equipment is needed (a wok, a cleaver, a steamer, etc.), how to stir fry, how to steam, how to make dumplings, even how to use chopsticks. In addition, there is a fantastic eight-page Glossary covering all aspects of Chinese cooking. This alone is worth the price of the book. But then you also get the interesting text, those stunning pictures, and great recipes. I strongly recommend Feeding the Dragon for anyone wanting to add to your knowledge of Chinese cuisine.

  2. I have to tell you that I tried reading two books that were all about Chinese cuisine, and had to stop because all I did was crave Chinese food. We already have a huge stockpile of Indian spices from my reading of Cutting for Stone! LOLOL

    I would bet the real deal Chinese food is very different from what we get over here in so many restaurants. And what were their parents thinking when they named these kids?!!

    This sounds very interesting. I have always wondererd what authentic Chinese cuisine must be like. I know from experience that what the US know as Chinese is very different from what they serve in German Chinese restaurants. A friend coming back from China said that the cuisine there was nothing like what we know.
