There are only a couple of national parks in the Western United States that we’ve never seen. Last year we were able to see one of them – Great Basin National Park. Now we can add this one to our list of Favorite Places.
Great Basin National Park is located in eastern Nevada, not far from the Utah border. The park is known for it’s 13,000-foot-high Wheeler Peak, for the Lehman Caves, and the 5000 year-old bristlecone pine trees. I also liked the crisp mountain air that smelled like a mix of sage and pine.
We thoroughly enjoyed the vistas that can be seen from the upper road. We could see for miles. While we were there the park was very quiet. In our drive to the top of the mountain we saw very few visitors, which is very unusual for a national park.
We visited in September and still saw snow left over from last winter. The park has four campgrounds that are perfect for car camping (no RVs). The park also has back-country trails and camping.
Near the entrance to the park is a nice covered picnic area. All around the roof line was a row of “cowboy art.” It looked to be made of blackened steel. It was an excellent bonus added to our trip to this new-to-us national park.
I hope you’ll join me again next Sunday for more Favorite Places. If you’d like to join in, just grab the button at the top of this post, put it on your blog along with info about one of your Favorite Places. Come back and leave a link in the comment section and we’ll all come and visit you.

I’ve never been to Great Basin. Wow it’s either high up or very shady to have snow on the side of the road in September. The long view is fantastic.
Beautiful! And that’s not too far from us either. It looks like a great road trip for us!
There is so much beauty in this country. Thank you for reminding me with these great posts.
That cowboy art looks dramatic – how big is it?
This one is now added to our TBV list. (I have my Margot-recommended TBRs *and* TBVs!) Not sure how we missed this one. Beautiful pictures there, especially the vista from the upper road.
That’s just gorgeous, but I’m going to guess it stays cold there year round since there was snow on the ground in September.
I have seen none of the national parks in the Western United States…and it seems I should. Snow in Sept. sounds great to me!
I love your weekly trips to fun places
