Favorite Places: All of America

grand-tetons-barn-2wtmkI’m taking a break from showing you pictures of Favorite Places I have visited to show you pictures all over the United States that someone else has taken. That someone is Joe Sohm, photographer extraordinaire who has now become an author. I’ve been very fortunate to receive a preview copy of Joe’s book, Visions of America along with some of the pictures in the book to share with you.

Joe Sohm has been taking pictures around the country for over thirty years. He had one goal: Show the images that define democracy. How does a person do that? Democracy is an idea, a concept, a belief. How can you show pictures that represents a land governed by the practice of social equality? This guy did it. Look at these pictures of some of our country’s Favorite Places.

Amazing, aren’t they? I have more photos to show you and lots more to tell you about this award-winning book. There are 1300 photos and 21 essays in the book. It’s impossible to cover it in one post. I’ll be sharing more over the weeks ahead. In the meantime, think about this: how do you show an image of a concept?

  • I saw pictures from this book on a couple of other posts, and each time I am impressed with exactly what you articulated: the ability to show concepts through images. Thanks for sharing some more of these great pictures!

  • This is the perfect book for you! I think all of the pictures are gorgeous, especially the one at the bottom – it looks like a painting.

  • I’ve heard such good things about the photographs in this book. And the ones you shared are truly wonderful.

I adored looking thru this book. All the pictures were so amazing. It reminded me of the books my grandparents would have out and we would flip thru looking at all the pretty pictures. I so want this book.

  • Beautiful! I’ve seen this book on another blog, and would love to get a copy for my coffee table …

As to your question of how you show an image of a concept … it looks like the author/photographer did a great job – I love the photos you shared!!
