Favorite Places: Icy Glaciers in Alaska

grand-tetons-barn-2wtmkThis is my weekly feature where I show you some of the placeswe see as we travel

around beautiful North America. I’ve been saving this one for a blistering, hot day

in the middle of summer. It’s HOT here! I can use the thought of a some

place that is freezing. Here are some photos to cool you off, well, mentally, at least.

glacierSeeing a glacier was definitely on our list when wevisited Alaska.

We took an all-day boat trip out of Valdez. That may look like a mountain

with snow on it but it’s all ice. The entire glacier was over a mile long.

mticeAs we got closer, the captain shut off the engine and we drifted

closer into the glacier. Up close it is a very eerie blue.

sealJust as I was thinking about how hard it would be to sustain any form of life out here,

what should we see but this sleek black seal pop up from the water below.

icecubesStanding outside on the deck, I was extremely cold. We had been forewarned.

We had along our warmest jackets and mittens. It felt as if we were floating among ice cubes.

Keep that thought in mind on this hot summer day. Stay cool.

Join me again next week for another Favorite Place.
