I’m challenging myself this year to see one Judi Dench movie a month. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance in Philomena. I enjoyed it so much that it made me want to go back and sample as many of her best movies and tv series.
THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL
Although they don’t know each other, a group of English retirees move to India. They’ve all been lured by the promises of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The problem is the hotel is not quite ready when they arrive. The young owner has more vision than he has money to complete his remodeling plans.
For the most part, the retirees look at their new home and new city as an adventure. Here are my favorites among the retirees:
Evelyn Greenslade (Judi Dench) grabbed at my heart right away. She’s a recent widow who discovers that her husband mismanaged all their money and she is now nearly broke. Moving to India was a financial necessity for her. But, she’s a trooper and she makes the best of the situation. She learns how to use a computer, starts a blog, gets a job, and reaches out to the others to help them adjust.
Muriel Donnelly (the amazing Maggie Smith) needs a hip replacement but she can’t afford it in England. There’s a special program in India so she and her wheel-chair are on their way. This woman is a racist and doesn’t mind sharing her opinions. India, the hotel and people there may a difference in her life. Her changes are worth watching for.
Graham Dashwood (Tom Wilkinson) is a retired judge who lived in India as a child. Those were happy times that ended when his parents snatched him away from a special friend. Now he is back to India to find his old friend.
There are several more characters in the movie that captured my attention. In addition the photography of India was so amazing. It was so bright and colorful that I really felt as if I was visiting the country too.
I saw this movie in the theater and now on dvd. I, of course, prefer the big screen, but the dvd from the library was also bright and the same fun and inspirational story. If you haven’t already seen the movie, I suggest you treat yourself to this movie.
