First Paragraph: Christmas in Absaroka County

Absaroka CountyI just started reading a Christmas story set in Wyoming. It’s Christmas In Absaroka County by Craig Johnson. Cable TV fans will recognize the main character, Walt Longmire. The author’s novels are the inspiration for the Longmire TV show. Here’s the first paragraph:

Driving south on I-25, I kept sneaking glances through my half-closed eyes in hope of seeing those first, dull, yellow rays of sunup crawling from the horizon.

My county in northern Wyoming is approximately seven thousand square miles, about the size of Vermont or New Hampshire. It’s a long way from one end to the other especially in times of crisis, so in my line of work it pays to have a substation. Powder Junction, in the southern part of Absaroka County, is where I subject at least one of the deputies on my staff to some of the most bucolic duty they’ll likely ever withstand in a lifetime of law enforcement.

What do you think? Did it make you want to keep reading?

Diane at Bibliophile By the Sea asks us to share the first paragraph of a book we are reading. As you can see it’s called First Chapter, First Paragraph Tuesday Intros. Visit Diane to read more First Paragraphs.

I am probably the only Wyomingite who has not read Craig Johnson’s books. I have them on my TBR list, but just keep getting side tracked. They are in great demand in our library and fly off the shelves at our ONE bookstore. Maybe I should put them on my Christmas list!! These books get rave reviews around here.

  6. Love the sound of the setting…and I would keep reading! Thanks…and here’s MY TUESDAY MEMES POST
