Book Review: Heat Lightning

HeatLighningAuthor: John Sandford

Publisher: Putnam Adult Books, 2007

Genre: Mystery, Crime Fiction

My Rating: B+

A complicated mystery that kept me reading and thinking. But first I have to say that I can’t help but love Virgil. He’s such a macho hero who is definitely not someone a woman should marry. He’s great at solving a mystery but, with three marriages in his history, he needs to stay single. Even so, women do love him, and the feeling is mutual.

Virgil is a detective with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. His boss, Lucas, (from the Prey series) assigned Virgil a case where men in their sixties and seventies are being killed and left at a veterans memorial with a lemon in their mouths.

As Virgil criss-crosses the state, he manages to determine this is a professional-hit crime. The big questions Virgil must answer are 1) how are the men connected, 2) who is behind this, 3) why are they being murdered, and 4) what’s with the lemon in the mouth?

Heat Lightning is the second novel in the Virgil Flowers series. They are so much fun that I’m off to find Book three. Highly recommended.
