Wondrous Words #186

As far as I’m concerned, words really are wondrous. That’s why I like paying attention to them while reading, and also why I love to play this weekly “game” of find-a-new-word-or-two. Thanks, Kathy, for creating the game and keeping it going.

One of the first things I do every morning is spend time in contemplation – a time of reading, thinking and prayer. It’s the best way I know to start a day. This year I’ve spent some of that early morning time reading the Upper Room Disciplines 2012. I’ve been looking back at the things I highlighted throughout the year. I found quite a few new words. I’ll share some of them with you this week and next.

1. antithetical: Somehow we fear that physicality and sensuousness are antithetical to relationship with God.

Antithetical means directly opposed or contrasted or mutally incompatible.

2. imprecation: Then, in keeping with many psalms, comes the imprecation: those who inhibit righteousness will be thrust away as thorns.

Imprecation mean a spoken curse.

3. dross: Praying with God’s word can help us recognize and separate the dross of unspiritual thoughts and habits that obscure the works of God’s Spirit in our lives.

Dross is something regarded as worthless; rubbish.

  • Hi Margot, It sounds like you have a powerful personal ritual in the morning. I’m so envious. On the other hand I do enjoy MLH bringing me coffee in the morning. It makes me feel loved which is not a bad way to start a day either!

  • Those are new to me but antithetical makes perfect sense. I love the sound of dross and think I can use it!

  • Words are wondrous and worthy of the attention we give them here! I like how your WWW post has a theme, taken from your early morning ritual.

  • Dross is a new word for me…this daily book sounds very interesting. I’m finding that my days at work seem to be very stressful and I think 2013 needs to be a year of inner peace for me. I like how you start your day out. I think I need to get up a little bit earlier and do the same thing. :D

  • I think you and I shared a theme this week- my “anathema” seems similar to your “imprecation”. They can both mean spoken curses. Antithetical fits in there too. Nice to meet you!

  • Dross is a wonderful word indeed, I should use it more often. I’m more familiar with antithesis than antithetical. Imprecation was new for me too. Your morning ritual does sound wonderful too Margot.
