Wednesday is the day to share new words we find in our reading. My whole family loves to help me. Cerrin, our youngest, specializes in finding the best new words in cartoons. Here’s her latest:
Adam by Brian Bassett
Proboscis sounded familiar but it didn’t come to mind right away. I didn’t detect any clues from the context so I had to look it up. Turns out proboscis is the nose of a mammal, especially when it is long and mobile, such as the trunk of an elephant or the snout of a tapir.
Wondrous Words Wednesday is sponsored by Kathy at Bermuda Onion. Visit Kathy for more new words or to play along,

I love Adam! He’s so much fun!
Low-blow, going for the nose. Great word! Thanks for sharing.
I love it when Cerrin finds words in the funnies!
Thanks! for sharing this.
I never heard about this word and the cartoon is funny. Thanks to you and to your daughter, Margot !
Jimmy Durante made fun of his own nose with the word proboscis — that’s the only reason I know it.
Here are some new words that I made up: http://daisybrain.wordpress.com/2010/06/27/words-that-should-be/
Love this – a laugh and a new word, too!
I too knew about the word b/c of Jimmy Durante. But I didn’t quite get the joke in the comic strip.
Proboscis is a great word. I like how you find news words from cartoons! Actually proboscis can apply to insects too- the sucking bit of mosquitos, and butterflies are called their proboscis too.
I love it!!!!!!! I like it when you use comics…very fun!
I love the Adam comics! What a fun way to find Wondrous Words!
I knew the meaning of the word but I still don’t really get the joke! “I hate to be immodest” “With your big nose, I bet that’s true” So does that mean that he (older guy) would expect him to be bragging about his big nose? What? LOL I don’t know.
This days is really wondrous day for those who shared for the new and advance books .This day you must wait.
