Today, in the United States, is the day we celebrate Labor Day. Originally, in 1882, this day was “a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” (from the US Department of Labor)
Prior to my retirement I spent the majority of my career as a Human Resource professional. In each of the three companies I worked for, it was my department’s responsibility to focus on the people who worked there. We helped hire, train, arrange benefits, settle disputes, and sometimes helped people leave the company.
My experiences gave me an overwhelming respect and appreciation for the various jobs that people do. All work has dignity if both the employee and the management respect the job that is performed.
Today I’d like to stop and show my appreciation for the work done by the following people:
The mail-person who delivers books to my door.
The construction workers who build and maintains the roads I love to travel on.
The people who prepare food especially for me.
The work of these people have enriched my life this year. Thanks to all of you.
Who are the workers who have enriched your life?

The mailperson for sure. And the doctors and nurses looking after the well being of my soon-to-be little one
I totally agree with you that all work has dignity. I was always taught that the job doesn’t matter, but how you do it does.
What a great post! I totally agree with you as well!
What is sad is that some people still have to work today. Do you think there would ever be a day that Americans didn’t think they needed to “go” some where????
What a lovely tribute. And…I think you should include a picture of yourself as a tribute for those who work tirelessly as caregivers to family members
Is this day what we call May Day celebrated on the 1st of May in honor of all workers. Thanks for a post that we all need to think about.
Lovely tribute Margot!
LOL I just love that the “food” your showing is popcorn lol
Dont forget Mothers, In my opinion they work the hardest.
Love you and glad your back.
Hi Margot — I, too, was a human resource specialist, but worked all my career with the Federal Government. This was a lovely post honoring workers. Glad you are back from your visit with your Mom. From past experience I know that helping her move from her home must have been a very emotional undertaking for both of you. Please keep up with your blog posts. I really enjoy reading them.
