Monthly Wrap-Up: July

Looking back on the books I read in July, I’d say it was a fairly lightweight month. Hidden Wives, a novel about the treatment of girls in polygamist marriages, was the only serious book I read. I read a classic children’s story, Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott, a general fiction, Heart On a String, a romance, Savor the Moment, a cookbook, United Cakes of America, and a graphic novel, Ethel and Ernest.

Everything else I read this month was a cozy mystery: Mrs. Jeffries and the Feast of St. Stephen, Hide In Plain Sight, Partners In Crime, and Murder Is Binding. I guess I was either feeling cozy this month or murderous.

My favorite character of the month was Mrs. Jeffries. Standing in for her is the author, Emily Brightwell. My sister introduced me to her and I enjoyed my time with the super organized leader of that detective household.

The Month Ahead:  During August I have a couple of books I’m looking forward to telling you about. One is the latest historical fiction from Ivan Doig. I am so thoroughly enjoying the story that I don’t want it to end.

My daughter, Candice, and I are reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett. It is such a moving story. It takes me back to the 1960s.

I also have a couple of cozy mysteries on my bookshelf and two good stories on my Kindle.

I’m also planning to take a week’s vacation from blogging in the middle of the month. I’m heading back to Southern California to help move my mom into a senior apartment complex. (We aren’t supposed to say assisted living anymore. It’s the “A” word.) That’s the time when I will travel light with my new Kindle.

What about you and your reading. Is your summer reading going the way you wanted it to?

  • You did better than me. I read only 7 books!

What Books I Read in July

  • I like the books that you read this month and hope the move for your mother goes smoothly. I’m having a little vacation on Thursday and can not wait!! Haven’t been away from my house for over 4 years so this will be a nice get-away!! My summer is going pretty good, but I need to get some painting done before I can say that I really accomplished anything other than reading!! :D

  • I certainly hope you were feeling cozy rather than murderous! :D I’ve been reading a variety of things but now have an ARC to read, and the end of this week is the book sale where I usually buy several tote bags full.

  • I had no idea that assisted living was an incorrect term now! I wonder what one says for nursing homes!

I read and enjoyed Eight Cousins not too long ago. Just finished reading American Bloomsbury for the second time, and it is just fascinating. I think you’d like it very much. I adored Ethel & Ernest. Though it is an overused adjective, I’d really call it ‘heartwarming.’ So lovely. Good luck with the new move. She is blessed to have you. Oh, I wanted to tell you that I just ordered the new kindle – the $139 version which ships the last of August!! I can’t believe I did it, but Tom and I both thought the price was right!

  • I loved, loved, loved The Help. A very good book.

  • Good luck with your mother’s move – I promise I won’t utter the “A” word!

  • My reading is going OK! But I wanted to blog about what I read during the rest of our stay in FL (for the Library Challenge) and I can’t seem to get around to that. Makes me appreciate what you do almost every day even more!

Good luck on your mom’s move — sounds like the best thing in the world for her (and for you and your sister). (I’m sure I’ll visit you often before you go on blog-vacation, but didn’t want to forget to wish her and you well!)

Hi nana! I hope you have a fun time reading more cool books! Love you! Q

  • Great reading month. I’ve been on a bit of a cozy stretch, too (well, if Nero Wolfe is considered cozy – I’m not sure, but he just feels like a cozy read to me!). I’ve been thinking about reading The Help. Love the idea of traveling light with the Kindle and still having a great selection of books!
