My husband and I are reading the book, Jubal Sackett, together. It’s a historical fiction from the 1700′s. Jubal Sackett is a young man traveling across America from South Carolina to Colorado. At the time, of course, those weren’t states. This was raw country populated by Indian tribes and wild animals.
A long time I sat in silence upon the bluff, drinking in the beauty of the night and the stars. We had traveled far in an almost empty land and now the mountains lay before us, far greater mountains than any I had seen, and the most distant seemed covered with snow.
The thought brought back the need for buffalo robes and warmer clothing. Autumn would bring cold winds and more rain and we were ill-fitted for it.
Life in this country was a lot different back then. Days were filled with the basics of survival. For other great teasers, be sure to visit MizB at Should Be Reading.

I can’t even imagine living in those times and traversing the country in such rough conditions.
I hope you both are enjoying the book. Here is my TT with link to a giveaway of the teaser book.
Ooooh. This sounds like my kind of book.
Like Kaye, I can’t imagine making the trip that early pioneers made. I was meant for the century that includes indoor bathrooms, glasses for vision, allergy meds (ugh – imagining the prairies in spring!), and GPS, so I wouldn’t end up where I didn’t want to be!
I know this is ditsy, but what I always think of is how did those early travelers endure the flying insects? I’ve nearly gone crazy when I just had a swarm of gnats swarming around my face; I’d really go nuts with the mosquitoes, deer flies, and all the other annoying pests in the wilderness. I’m very happy I was born when insect repellant is an easily obtainable product, thank you.
Interesting time to read about, but what a rough life it must have been in the “New World” back then! Excellent teaser. My husband and I frequently read the same books, but never together. Might be fun to try sometime.
My teaser: Whiter Than Snow
I would think that You would get used to the normal things. Like no air conditining…It is not that it was less hot it is just that the body adapted to the heat because you were in it all the time. And The bugs You would just get used to them because there was no other way.
I like to think that I would have been very good at homesteading.
I’m with Cerrin on this … I appreciate the modern conveniences, but I believe I’d have adapted (not much choice really after all) but I think we could have been good homesteaders. If you didn’t know about AC or bug spray, you couldn’t miss them now could you? When I read historical novels I always put myself into the era and I feel like this era is I’d have been pretty good in. (NOw if I’d been born at a time when girls had to sit still all day in their long dresses and embroider samplers — I’d have had trouble in that era.)
Nice teaser. Mine is at The Crowded Leaf.
So glad to hear you’re reading together…and a Sackett book, besides. L’Amour is one of Dave’s favorite authors and the Sackett series especially. We even had a dog named Sackett – Springer Spaniel that lived to be 16. She was our baby!
Hope you’re having fun sharing the story. His books are always good.
I do enjoy reading these kinds of books. thanks for stopping by.
sounds wonderful
