Favorite Places: Big Bend National Park

Welcome to Favorite Places where I share some of the places we have visited in our travels.

This week I’ve been thinking about Big Bend National Park located in southern Texas.

The park is known for it’s beautiful natural resources.

A visitor can see the Chinos Mountains, the Rio Grande River as well as the desert.

Big Bend National Park lives up to it’s first name – Big.

The term “seeing for miles” is very appropriate here.

For me, it had a feeling of loneliness. This old homestead down in a valley

looked empty and alone. We saw very few visitors while visiting. That added to the feeling.

The Texas state flower, Bluebonnets, were just starting to bloom in the park when we visited (late winter). My pictures didn’t turn out too good. I borrowed this one from the National Park Service’s website for Big Bend National Park.

PLEASE NOTE: After nearly 70 Favorite Places posts, I’m running low on places to tell you about. I’m going to change this feature to a twice-a-month feature. I’ll be back on the first and third Sunday of the month. Look for Favorite Places again on June 6th and 20th. Thanks to everyone who has been faithfully reading my posts. I appreciate you.

  • I was in Texas only once, but what stands out in my mind is the memory of country music everywhere – even piped into the restrooms!

  • That really does look desolate, but gorgeous!

  • I would have guessed that you’d feel just like this about Big Bend! One of our favorite places too — because of the isolation and sense of space! but definitely not one where I’d want to live.

Twice a month for favorite Places is understandable; I’m kind of running out of old places to post about when we haven’t done much where we are except remodel the bathroom.

But maybe it’s time to get back on the road again?

Thanks for showing off Texas, Margot. It is starkly beautiful out in that part of my state and I do appreciate your showing off my beloved bluebonnets. I love all the spring wildflowers we have here. Of course, our highway department seeds the roadsides, but much has to do with how much rain falls in January and February. We were lucky this year. We thank Lady Bird Johnson for that blessing in our Texas lives.

  • What gorgeous photos…I find it amazing how many national parks you’ve visited. My hubby and I would someday love to ride our motorcycle throughout the USA and visit these beautiful places!

  • I’ve never been to Texas… someday!

Maybe this summer you will see some great new places you just HAVE to tell us all about…making me eagar for the open road and road trips.
So many LITTLE favorite places that are out there. But no pictures. Ahh the could be a problem. How do you take a picture of something you miss? That favorite Mexican place…That is no longer there…That is a big problem.

  • I like how you describe it as lonely. I drove through Texas once and I only saw a few distant ranches, no hills, not much vegetation and the only trees were along the water ways. (I went through the northern part from the pan handle of OK to New Mexico)

  • oh I meant to add–you could tell us about some of your favorite local spots on the other weeks.

  • Thanks for sharing your beautiful pictures! I love Big Bend and have been there 5 or 6 times. I live near Dallas so it’s about a 10 hour drive. It’s definitely one of my favorite places as well! My favorite spots are the Mule Ears and the Sam Nail Ranch. It’s where I first fell in love with studying geology.

  • It does look a little lonely. I was wondering when you’d run out of cool places to tell us about!
