On Sunday I like to show you some of my Favorite Places that I have seen on my travels.
Today I want to tell you about a little section of the Oregon Coast.
There is nothing like the beach, even if you have to wear a warm jacket because it’s so cold.
Recently, while visiting my granddaughters and their parents, we spent four days during Spring Break at Rockaway Beach. As you can see from the map above, it’s not far from Portland. The town was originally built in the 1920′s by Portlanders who wanted a summer resort.
A friend of my daughter and son-in-law owns a beautiful cottage called Saltair. It is the perfect setting for a week away. It’s quiet yet you can still hear the waves rolling in. If you are interested, she rents the cottage. Her website is here.
From the cottage we walked across the street, down this path and saw the sight above. To the left is those two big rocks you saw above and the next picture. It’s a great place to walk, look for sea shells, splash in the water, fly a kite, work a crossword puzzle, or read a book.
I have found that, if you breathe deeply of the salt air, you sleep peacefully at night.
I hope you’ll join me again next Sunday for more Favorite Places.

Margot – - I have an award for you here
I love the Oregon coast (I used to live in Eugene). In the 70s there was a fabulous casual restaurant in Yachats where you could get a cup of coffee and yummy homemade pie and watch the waves through the window while eating. When I needed a break from grad school, I’d drive to Florence, up to Yachats, and then to Waldport to Salem and home. It made for a great Saturday. I’d stop along the way when anything caught my eye.
When we took our trip I think we want from Cannon Beach to Florence – it was wonderful!
How beautiful! I’ve never been to the Pacific Northwest, but sure hope to visit one day.
I would love to visit Oregon someday. That cottage looks like the perfect place!
The Northwest is a part of the country I have yet to discover. Dave and I have discussed taking the train out, then renting a car to enjoy beaches like the one pictured. Wish I had one of the Star Trek things that could just “beam me” to that beach right now.
I love that you said you were visiting your granddaughters and their parents! Isn’t that the way – once you have kids, your parents kind of forget about you!
This is a dreamy place! The Oregon coast is great during the summer months, but the magic is truly revealed during the stormy winter months. So much beauty in the dark mystery of the winter-time coast, not to be missed. And a lot less people…
Great post, I’ll be sure to pass it on to the Lady of Saltair.
At first glance those rocks look like elephants!! I want to rent that gorgeous cottage!!! Those pictures make me want to visit this beautiful spot immediately!
Thanks for sharing the great pics – and the cabin info. This is one of my dream places to visit so I’m saving the website for the cabin and putting it on our list of places to visit as soon as the nest is empty – just a few more months.
Officially homesick now!! Beautiful pictures. I know people who have stayed at that cottage!
I so need a vacation. You are making me hungry for a trip
This post made me so homesick. I grew up in Oregon, my family had a cabin on the beach just north of Yachats for a long time and then sold it and bought one on the Alsea River (Waldport). So many wonderful memories!

We stayed at Loon Lake Lodge & RV Resort (http://www.loonlakerv.com), one of the more scenic Oregon coast RV parks that offers camping, boating and fishing near the coast. It’s an excellent Oregon campground that makes a good basecamp for deer and elk hunting! The lodge also offers cabin and yurt rentals. The Loon Lake Lodge and RV Resort is located about 45 minutes from Reedsport. It offers year-round resort Oregon coast lodging in cabins, yurts and motel rooms, or waterfront camping in scenic tent or RV park sites with full-hookups, satellite TV and Wi-Fi – all on one mile of lake frontage on the scenic Loon Lake. The marina offers jet ski rentals, boat rentals and pontoon boats.
Love your blog Margot! I gave you a link at http://www.pacific101.com/resources.htm. I first visited the coast in 1973 and am fortunate to make it my home now. Another beautiful trip is from Florence to the Redwoods in California. Great place to visit and live, http://www.fawnridge.florenceoregon.net.
Long time reader, 1st time poster. I simply want to say thanks for all you do with your website. This is one of the first sites I visit every night.
Beautiful! I always make a stop at one of the Mo’s restaurants when going to the Oregon coast.
