Favorite Place: Ouray, Colorado

Today is the day I share with you one of the place we’ve visited in our travels. It’s one we call a Favorite Place. Today, I want to take you to a very small town in southwestern Colorado – Ouray, Colorado.

We spent time in Ouray back when our children were pre-teens. We had so

much fun there that this summer we wanted to re-visit the place.

The campground was above the town and

gave us the view you see in the picture above.

I love the look of small western towns like this one. Here’s Main Street.

I can imagine the old-timers who used Ouray as their headquarters.

Many miners came here seeking their fortune.

Ouray has it’s priorities right, in my opinion. Here is their

beautiful Walsh Library, right next door to the fire department.

And here is the courthouse, built in 1888. Notice that the street

is not paved. Only Main Street, which is the highway, has that honor.

This is the main attraction in Ouray, especially for our children.

The hot springs and pool is open year round.

Most everything still looks the same even though it’s been quite a few years.

I hope you’ll join me again next Sunday for more Favorite Places. If you’d like to join in, just grab the button at the top of this post, put it on your blog along with info about one of your Favorite Places. Come back and leave a link in the comment section and we’ll all come and visit you.

  • We were in Ouray too and it was really pretty. I think we spent the whole time figuring out how to pronounce it! There was also a cute little coffee shop right on the main street that I still remember – it was so unique to sit there with your coffee, surrounded by people with many piercings, and have those huge mountains right there enclosing the town like you were in the Alps! Thanks again for the memories!!!

  • That library is so pretty! I love the look of those small western towns too.

  • I did enjoy seeing these photos, Margot. Nice to see it still has some unpaved streets, which gives a feeling of what it must have been like in the past.

This week I’ve posted photos of Bath.

  • These are great pictures. I feel like I could be walking down those streets. I can see why you would list it as a favorite place.

  • Oooh. I would love to visit that town and hot springs. I love it that the streets aren’t paved.

  • I would love to go anywhere in Colorado! I’m guessing the pool is heated – maybe by the hot springs?

I love the fact that you highlighted Ouray this week, Margot. I’m a regular reader of your blog and favorite spots, by the way. We’ve been to Ouray several times. It’s been a while though. I’ve been to that pool and once when we were there in May, we were snowed on as we sat in it. Yes, as Kathy surmised, it is heated by the springs, right? We stayed at the St. Elmo Hotel. wonder if it is still there. this was probably over 20 years ago. Thanks for some lovely memories!

I love this!! I had thought of this wonderful place a few times recently… I must take the girls & Mark (we all love hot pools)! I wonder what time of year your photos were taken? I see snow on the mountains, but some parts look kind of brown. Thanks for reminding me of this beautiful Colorado town!

  • I’m in love with the architecture of this place!! What a view!!

  • Lovely — I’m missing beautiful Colorado!

The pools is heated by the hot springs there are many sections in the pool getting gradualy hotter or colder depending on which way you go. I remember this place fondly and really want to return. It was a wonderful place to camp and had so many fun things to do.

  • I (Tami) visited Ouray with my parents when I was in high school. Don’t remember a thing about it except the narrow, winding road through the pass we had to take to get there. Dad commented that he thought the town was named because you want to shout “OURAY!” when you finally get to the bottom! :) Thanks for sharing.
