Favorite Places: Grand Teton National Park

Favorite Places is my Sunday feature in which I share some of the special places we have visited. For the next few weeks Favorite Places will be on re-run. These are posts from last year but many readers may have missed them.

GTetonsMost people go right past these mountains either going to or from Yellowstone National Park. They are so spectacular that I don’t know how anyone can see them and not just stay. The range is along the northwest corner of Wyoming and is equally as beautiful from the Idaho side. On the Wyoming side, the range has been protected by the National Park Service.  And, it has all the things we love about the national parks: good campgrounds, ranger-led hikes and other activities, interpretive centers and museums and an ability to go back in time.

JennyLakeForty plus years ago my husband and I camped here on our honeymoon trip and it’s been a sentimental favorite ever since. We camped at the Jenny Lake Campground which has since lost many of it’s pine trees to a beetle that has ravaged so many western forests. The campground is still there but takes only tent campers.

If you like to hike this is a great place for you. There are many trails that can get you right up into the woods. The Park Service Rangers lead many good informative hikes. Back when our kids were in elementary school, we took a three day backpack trip that we still talk about. We took a ski lift (near Jackson Hole) to the top and hiked the back-country from there. The Ranger who registered us for the trip said it was “all down hill from there”. And he said it with a straight face, too!

SnakeRvrWe almost always take a float trip down the Snake River which runs right through this area. Of course it’s a lot more exciting if you go in June than in September. You can also ride horses and boats and get in some world-class trout fishing. Another one of our favorite things to do is look for wildlife. Finding moose is our favorite and we’ve never visited without seeing at least one. The easiest places to spot them are behind the big lodge and at Oxbow Bend (just down from the lodge).

BuffaloAs the buffalo herd has grown it is very easy to see them. On our last trip we sat by the side of the road and watched the herd gradually coming toward us. We watched them jump over the fence, cross the road, and then jump the fence on the other side. My husband estimated there were between 100 to 150 buffalo. It was great entertainment.

If you need a mountain “fix” or are looking for a majestic landscape, I’d recommend a visit to The Grand Tetons. For more online information go to:http://www.nps.gov/grte/.

I hope you’ll join me again next Sunday for more Favorite Places. If you’d like to join in, just grab the button at the top of this post, put it on your blog along with info about one of your Favorite Places. Come back and leave a link in the comment section and we’ll all come and visit you.

  • I remember these! But the picture of buffalo is worth seeing again!

  • This looks lovely!! I would love to go there with my husband and sons!!

  • Just gorgeous! Maybe we’ll make it out west when we retire.

  • great pictures of the majestic tetons! And I love the Bison hopping the fence. It is a beautiful place. Thanks for stopping by today. I do think the willow creek figurines are so inspirational. I’ll have to look for the angel of courage–I don’t think I’ve seen that one.

  • We camped at Jenny Lake in 1964 — with our 4 kids. My husband took the older two hiking up to the Lake (or some Lake, I’m not sure) to go fishing; when the babies woke up from their nap I took them outside the camper to play and there was a mother bear and cub standing 3 feet from the door of the camper (it didn’t have very big windows and I hadn’t seen it out there). The 2-year old was toddling over toward what he probably thought was a big toy. The bear just watched as I calmly unlocked the camper door and pushed everybody back in. I didn’t even scream. Had an interesting discussion with Bill when he and older kids got back though ;>)

We saw a lot of bears that trip, but by the next time we went a few years later they had pretty much all been relocated.

I agree though, it is one of the most beautiful of all of the National Parks.

  • Beautiful. Love the photo of the buffalo.

  • I would LOVE to see this spot. And I would love to see the Buffalo… Thanks for sharing.

  • The Tetons are one of my favorite places too. Nice idea to do the reruns.
