It’s amazing to me how many new words I find each week since I started paying attention. For instance, I’ve been reading Agatha Christie’s books for years and, I guess, I never paid attention to all the unfamiliar words she uses. Here are a few examples.
1. cudgelled: He cudgelled his brain in vain, but the thing eluded him.
Cudgelled means to think hard about a problem.
2. unctous: He spoke in French and his tones were rich and unctous.
Unctous means oily, greasy, smarmy.
3. Insouciance: An easy-going insouciance was his chief characteristic, and it stood him in good stead in more than one tight corner.
Insouciance means casual lack of concern; indifference.
