I found a couple of new (to me) words this week. I’ve been reading Michael Connelly’s newest thriller, Nine Dragons. Here’s what I found:
1. funicular: Bosch and his daughter usually took the funicular tram up and back down from the Peak.
Funicular means operating by cable with ascending and descending cars counterbalanced.
2. stasis: For the next fourteen-plus hours while in flight things would continue to happen with his daughter, and with the case, but Bosch would be in stasis.
Stasis means a period or state of inactivity or equilibrium.
Thanks to Kathy at Bermuda Onion’s Weblog for gathering everyone and their new words together. Click on the website’s name to visit her.

I knew stasis but funicular, no!
Thanks.
Here is my Wondrous Words Wednesdays post!
I’ve been in a funicular – in Lynton, Devon. It takes you from Lynton at the top down to Lynmouth on the coast. It was a great experience.
It’s fun to see you’re reading 2 mysteries at once – that must be interesting keeping all the clues and people straight! It made me realize when I read more than one book I always seem to have different genres going.
Funicular is just a fun word to say!
Surely, this will bring it back to some of you!

These posts always bring me back to my childhood – I had a 6th grade teacher who had this enormous dictionary on a pedestal next to his desk and we were all to go up and use it whenever we were confused about a word or how to spell something. I wore a path out between my desk and that book let me tell you!
I knew funicular from our time in France. There’s a funicular in Lyon, where we used to live. Thanks for participating!
I knew both – like Kathy the funicular from France and stasis from my biology days
Here are my words
The first thing I thought of when I read this post was that my dad and mother used to have a record of Funiculi funicular and he alwasy told us it had something to do with a railroad. He probably explained it better, but I just didn’t hear it being a kid and not too interested in “old people music”! So it was fun to read your post and the link from rainikre above to the You Tube of the song. Thanks!!!
I really love these Wondrous Words posts. And I just read your Tuesday teaser – can you believe it, I’ve never read a Harry Bosch novel? The Nine Dragons sounds good – I’m going to add it to my list for a read after I come out of November’s deadlines!
I never would have guessed that’s what funicular meant. Fun words.
That word “funicular” really hits me. That’s the way we got up in the Gateway Arches. We took the children a long time ago. I’ve never heard that word. Thanks Margot.
Two news ones for me, Margot.
“Funicular” is very neat sounding!
I love the Bosch stories! There are always some great words and phrases in them.
My words are here.
Great words! I’ve never even heard of funicular!
