Teaser Tuesday is the day I throw out a few sentences and try to tempt you into reading one of the books I’m reading.
And then we get to the room in the back, which was once shared by the three Hsu girls. We were all childhood friends. And now they’ve all grown and married and I’m here to play in their room again. Except for the smell of camphor, it feels the same – as if Rose, Ruth, and Janice might soon walk in with their hair rolled up in big orange-juice cans and plop down on their identical narrow beds.
Am I the only one remembering those orange-juice-can rollers? Teaser Tuesday is sponsored by MizB at Should Be Reading. Visit MizB for more teasers.
Those sentences are from The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I’m re-reading this old favorite.
I’m using the same book to answer the question: It’s Tuesday, Where are you?
I’m in San Francisco playing mah jong with three elderly Chinese American women. They are all friends of my mother who recently died. They’ve invited me to take my mother’s place in the club.

For more teasers visit either or both of these websites. I’ll be back with my review of The Joy Luck Club on Thursday for an edition of My Favorite Reads.

Isn’t it a lovely book?! I remember my mother having some very large rollers, but not orange juice cans I’m afraid.
I’m reluctant to admit it, but I do remember using juice cans for rollers, back before they started making the really big plastic ones. (Yes, I am the oldest woman in the world.) This sounds like a great read!
Two things: Yes, I even used juice can rollers! And one of my favorite lines from Joy Luck Club is when she says she learned mah jong in college and the aunties make a comment about “Jewish mah jong.” Too funny.
Read this one some time back. Popular one! Here’s my Teaser
Oh yes, I used the juice cans. And to think I have trouble sleeping NOW, with no juice cans!
Lots of talk about this book lately. Haven’t read it, but have enjoyed The Kitchen God’s Wife. I always wanted long straight hair!
Good teaser, here is mine, http://zetor-mogsblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/teaser-tuesday.html
sounds intriguing. I used sponge rollers in my hair. If you want to wander down my road I’m home.
Hi Margot,
Haven’t read this book, but have heard lots of good about it. I’ll have to put it on my TBR list. Have a great day!
Sherrie
I have it with me. Will read it soon.
Teaser Tuesdays: The Secret Hour by Luanne Rice
Great teaser – I’ve always wanted to read this book and haven’t gotten around to it. I have to read it now.
I only ever saw the movie – which I thought told a lovely story. I can only assume the book is far superior so I’m glad you have found a good read.
Fantastic tease, fantastic book! Mine is here: http://rundpinne.blogspot.com/2009/10/casting-off-teaser-tuesdays.html
No, never used orange juice cans as rollers. But I did use to do this twisty thing and pin my hair up (pin curls?). And perms! Oh my goodness! You just brought back memories of getting my hair permed! But now that I’m older, I find I’m happy with what I have (straight hair). It’s very easy to take care of!
Yes, I enjoyed reading both The Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God’s Wife about 5-6 years ago, there was a wave of that kind of books written by Chinese women authors here in Scandinavia at that time. As to hair rollers, never heard of juicecan rollers, were they really empty juicecans? We didn’t have them, but I remember the big pale blue plastic ones, and even worse: one of my childhood friends still uses them.
Great fun following you, Margot, shows how small the world is, we all have the same memories and experiences. I am born and bred Norwegian and have only been to the States for a fortnight some 10 yars ago.
Yes, I remember the orange juice can rollers!! I’ve never read this but it’s on my list of ‘To Read Before I Die’. lol
This quote was a good reminder for me that I need to re-read this book for book club this month. I haven’t read it in a few years.
This is one of those books that I keep intending to pick up.
Fun teaser.
Here’s my Teaser! ~ Wendi
I read this so long ago but remember bits and pieces of it to this day!
What happy memories. That teaser reminds me of a part towards the end of Little Women where Jo returns to the old room and then writes a poem about the sisters childhood together.
Thanks for sharing!
Great teaser from one of my ultimate favorite books!!
I am embarrassed to say that I have not read the book (although it is on my shelves) or seen the movie. What am I doing with my time?!
I really LOVED The Joy Luck Club when I read it; Enjoying it I hope? Great teaser.
I’d love to revisit THE JOY LUCK CLUB. It’s not on my shelves; I’ll have to look at the library …
and orange juice cans? not here! I used my mother’s itchy/prickly rollers, then sat under the soft bonnet hairdryer.
