Wondrous Words #34

vocabularyI’ve gathered a few new (to-me) words from my reading this week. Here’s what I found:

1. solecisms: William found himself torn between benignly ignoring her solecisms and misinterpretations, or correcting them, which could lead to an edgy debate and a slight air of offence on Marcia’s part. (From Corduroy Mansions -chapter 2)

Solecisms means a grammatical mistake in speech or writing.

2. non sequitur: And she would often also resort to the mostg extraordinary non sequitur, as se did with this reference to the Chinese thing in centuries. (From Corduroy Mansions -chapter 2)

Non sequitur means a conclusion or statement that does not logically follow from the previous argument or statement. In the original Latin, literally ‘it does not follow.’

3. puerile: Riley glared at Agent Hamlin for a moment, and then rolled to eyes to convey just how puerile she found his tactics. (From Precession by Abigail Arrington)

Puerile means childishly silly and trivial.

4. obdurate: “We object,” Sam responded in an obdurate tone. (From Precession by Abigail Arrington)

Obdurate means stubbornly refusing to change one’s opinion or course of action.
