Favorite Places: Valdez, Alaska

It’s time to feature another spot in Alaska. It’s such an incredible place that I could show it in Favorite Places, as they say, for a month of Sundays. This week let me show you a little bit of Valdez.
There are a few ways to get to Valdez. We took the Richardson Highway which goes past the beautiful Wrangall/St. Elias Mountains (the picture at the top of my blog page was taken there). Valdez is surrounded by the equally beautiful Chugach Mountains which are overflowing with waterfalls.
One of the first things that delighted us was the abundance of various birds right in the campground. We are always thrilled when we see bald eagles in the states. In Valdez they were as plentiful as robins in the midwest.
One of the first things we did was to check out the harbor and sign up for a day trip out to the glaciers. Most people think of the Exxon Valdez oil spill when they think of Valdez. Residents here are proud of the fact that there is no longer a problem here.
We found the harbor and surrounding Prince William Sound pristine and birds, sea creatures and wildlife are abundant.

I hope you’ll join me again next Sunday when I’ll show you another Favorite Place.

  • It is truly a dream of mine to visit Alaska. My roommate two summers ago now lives in Anchorage, and my husband has a good friend who also lives there. Hopefully we can make this dream a reality within the next few years.

    Gorgeous photos!

  • Just beautiful! One of my best friends lives in Alaska, and I will definitely be visiting her someday. (when the finances are better!) I can’t wait to go. Love your pictures!

  • What a gorgeous picture of an eagle! We have friends who spend a lot of time in Sitka fishing, and we spend a lot of time at their house eating salmon and other great catches, so we have seen a lot of their pictures. I think Alaska doesn’t have the good reputation it deserves!

  • Those pictures are just gorgeous. I really hope to make it to Alaska one day.

  • My cousin went to Alaska for her honeymoon. She said it was one of the prettiest places to see nature on Earth.

  • I love when you feature Alaska. It is one place I would love to visit. I love movies and books that are set there. Thanks for being my tour guide, Margot!

  • Beautiful. I admit that I thought the oil spill had not been completely cleaned up. Glad to know it is back to being gorgeous.

We are considring a cruise to Alaska. After seeing you pictures I really think it would be great to see…even though I dont care for the cold lol

  • Hi Margot. I’m so glad I learned about your blog! I decided to comment on the Alaska post instead of the book one, because I was so delighted to find both places to go and things to read. Alaska is a huge blank white spot on our colored in map of states visited. We hope to remedy that soon. your pictures are fabulous

Thanks for visiting our blog. I’ll visit you often!!

  • Wow. I’ve never been to Alaska, but I really want to go – and take my sons there. Your pictures were great – thanks for sharing them.

    Sue
