Wondrous Words #33

vocabulary

I love gathering up all these new-to-me words wherever I go in my reading. Kathy at Bermuda Onion’s Weblog sponsors this weekly feature of like-minded Word-Aholics. Here are a few I found this week:

1. sotto voce:  ”Watch out for Colm tonight,” Lynette said sotto voce, “Cyrus heard him talking about Luke at Fully Caffeinated this morning and it wasn’t good.”  (From Barbara Bretton’s Laced With Magic.)

Sotto voce means speaking or singing in a quiet voice so as not to be overheard.

2. tisane: “We would need Lilith for that and maybe one of Janice’s tisanes to help him sleep.”  (From Barbara Bretton’s Laced With Magic)

Tisane is an herbal tea, consumed especially for its medicinal properties.

3.  midrash: The genre into which this book falls is midrash, although those unfamiliar with the tradition will call it biblical fiction.  (From Beth Fish Reads on a review of Fallen by David Maine.)

Midrash refers to an ancient commentary on part of the Hebrew scriptures, attached to the biblical text.

Good words this week, don’t you think? Have you found any new words this week?
