It’s Wednesday and time to gather up all the new words I’ve learned this week. Now that I’ve been playing this game seriously for the last three months, my eyes are open to finding new words all over the place. This week is a perfect example. Here are four new words, none from the books I’m reading. Interesting, isn’t it?
1. This word came from the website of Hatchette Book Group. They wrote about a new book of theirs, Follow Me by Joanna Scott.
paean: ”. . . in FOLLOW ME, Joanna Scott has crafted a paean to the American tradition of re-invention and a sweeping saga of timeless and tender storytelling.”
paean means a song of praise.
2. The next word I saw was in the title of a book in the sidebar of BooksPlease‘s blog.
elegy: “An Elegy For Easterly by Petina Gappah”
elegy means a poem of serious reflection.
3. This one was in a knitting magazine, Fons and Porter’s Love of Knitting.
finials: “The polymer clay finials designed by a mother/daughter team are paired with beautifully hand-finished sticks from 6″ to 14″ in length.”
finials means an ornament at the top, end or corner of an object.
4. And the last one was on Twitter – a site called The Onion. I know, I should have let it go, but my curiosity drove me on.
misogynist: “Misogynist Gets Laid”
misogynist means a man who hates women.
Those were my word-adventures for the week. What new words did you find?

Wow, you found your words in a great variety of places. I’ve heard finial used when referring to the thing that screws on top of a lamp to hold the shade in place, but not for anything else. Thanks for playing along.
misogynist…FINALY a word I knew! lol
I love hearing the new words…and it is best when there is one I know.
Finial was one of my words last week! I actually knew all of your words this time.
