I love this meme. All week long I keep an eye out for new (to me) words. I no longer skip over them but look up the meaning and jot them down. Then I gather them up for Wednesday. This is the brain child of Kathy at Bermuda Onion’s Weblog.
During the Read-a-Thon I read Agatha Christie’s The Murder on the Links. My review is directly below Wondrous Words. Here are a few new words from the book:
- asperity as in “At any rate, he’s doing something,” I said with asperity. “If there’s anything to find, he’ll find it. Now you –” Asperity means harshness of tone or manner.
- exigencies as in “Mademoiselle Daubreuil,” said M. Hautet, sweeping off his hat, we regret infinitely to disturb you, but the exigencies of Law — you comprehend?” Exigencies means an urgent need or demand.
- empressement as in “We accepted the invitation with empressement.” Empressement means animated eagerness or friendliness.
- soupcon as in “It would not surprise me,” replied Poirot, with a soupcon of malice. Soupcon means a very small quantity of something.
If you, too, love new words, check out this weekly meme at Kathy’s blog. What new words have you learned any new words this week?

I can hear Poirot saying ‘soupcon’ . It sounds a little French to me.
I knew soupcon from our days in France, but the rest are new to me. My guess for empressement was totally wrong. Thanks for playing along today!
ohhh…good words! I especially like “empressement”; its just fun to say, isn’t it?
(LoL…my grandma used to have one of those fox stoles with the heads still on them – they freaked me out, too!)
Enjoy the rest of your week, and have a great weekend!
Hi Margot,
Thank you for dropping by my blog today.
I love your words; I’ve never heard for any of them before…I guess that’s a little sad to admit lol
Thanks so much for adding some fantastic new words to my vocabulary.
-Bobbie
Did you take notes all thru Readathon? That’s a good idea for a break from reading during the next one, to look up the definitions of words you have found.
Great list of words – now I’ll know what they mean when I read the book.
The last two words are new to me! Thanks!
Wondrous Words Wednesday
Great words, Margot! I’ve loved soupcon for a long time. But I’d never heard of empressement. (Which is not good, when I come from a country where French is one of the official languages, ha!)
I always love finding out what words everyone has discovered during the week.
Meanwhile, mine are here.
I have a little something for you here!
I knew all your words this week! I love asperity; it sounds so much like what it means (to me anyway)!
