This weekly feature asks us to keep track of new words we find as we are reading. Its a good feature as it keeps me from skipping over unfamiliar words. This week I read a super book, Home Another Way by Christa Parrish. I found a few new-to-me words.
Uxoricide means the killing of one’s wife. It was used in the book like this: “Call me foolish, but I’d always thought uxoricide was something to be ashamed of, like beating your kid or drowning a sack of puppies.”
Brumal means wintry and was used like this: “It happened somewhere between the brumal mountain nights . . .”
Viscid means glutinous or sticky. Used in the book like this: “. . . and a viscid warmth radiated from my gut, seeping into my extremities.”
Good words from a very good book. My review is posted below. I’m going to be giving away a copy of the book if you are interested. Keep reading. Kathy at Bermuda Onion’s Weblog is the sponsor of Wondrous Words. For more of this great feature click the button.

Great words, Margot, I wasn’t familiar with any of them!
Viscid was the only one I knew, great words!! I’ve always sort of tended to infer definitions based on context, and only looking up words that really befuddled me. I’m finding it very interesting to play along with this meme. I think I pay closer attention to the odd words now.
By the way..the photo you have up on your favorite places sidebar, it reminds me so very much of where I grew up, the Mission Mountains in western Montana. It beautiful, makes me a bit homesick!
I think I have cooked some viscid stuff at one time or another. Good words! My post is here
You did find some great words. Now I’m curious to know what it’s called when you kill your husband. Thanks for playing along.
I must admit, I chuckled with uxoricide. Here’s mine:
